Frequently Asked Questions

About sleep apnea & dental sleep medicine.

Dental sleep medicine is a speciality focused on the use of oral appliance therapy and myofunctional approaches to treat sleep-disordered breathing, including snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Farheen is certified in integrated dental sleep medicine and works alongside physicians to provide evidence-based non-surgical care.
For mild-to-moderate OSA, oral appliance therapy is recognized by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as a first-line treatment and an effective CPAP alternative — particularly for those who cannot tolerate CPAP. For severe OSA, it can be used in combination with CPAP or as a bridge treatment. We assess your specific case to determine the best approach.
We use validated screening questionnaires including the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and STOP-BANG assessment, alongside a detailed clinical examination and CBCT airway analysis. For confirmed diagnosis, we coordinate with sleep medicine physicians for polysomnography or home sleep testing as needed.
Not always — but it is the most common symptom of upper airway resistance and often the first sign of sleep-disordered breathing. Around 50% of loud snorers have some degree of OSA. We always screen snoring patients for OSA to ensure appropriate management.
TMJ dysfunction, sleep bruxism and sleep apnea are closely interrelated. Sleep apnea causes arousal responses that can trigger bruxism. Conversely, bruxism forces load the TMJ, causing damage. Poor sleep amplifies pain sensitivity, worsening TMJ symptoms. Our integrated approach addresses all three simultaneously for the best outcomes.
